Orion AdBlocker
Prepared on 12 October 2026, version 1.0.6 refreshes the interface, makes visual ad blocking more selective, improves YouTube ad skipping, and adds automated checks and CI.
-
More precise visual blocking: Cross-site, structure-based rules now require clearer ad signals, helping protect menus, forms, articles, and other legitimate content without relying on a fixed domain list. Empty containers are removed when they contain only ads; observed cases were tested on Allrecipes, SFGate, The New York Times Spanish homepage, and Fandom.
-
Safer popup handling: Promotional popups are distinguished more carefully from legitimate dialogs, while cookie consent notices remain visible.
-
Improved YouTube ad skipping: Limited retries handle ignored clicks and consecutive ads, keep the Skip button visible, and avoid retry loops when the player rejects seeking. A skip is counted only after the ad transition is observed.
-
Redesigned popup: Spanish and English layouts put the current site, protection status, blocks on this tab, and domain pause first. Statistics and settings move into an expandable panel, and internal browser pages get an explanatory view.
-
Clearer tab feedback: The toolbar icon shows โฆ during initial analysis, then the tab's block count; it dims when protection is paused. Its badge uses blue, amber, or red for detected ad load, and the popup uses the same colors with a text label. The former โtrust scoreโ is now an advertising score: 100 after an initial scan with no detections, or โNo dataโ before that scan or without a page response. A score of 100 does not certify an ad-free page.
-
Reliable per-tab state: The block counter and badge recover the active tab's state after a service worker restart and retain counts across repeated load events.
-
Lean build and stronger checks: Unused DOM interceptors, experimental paywall code, and other inactive modules were removed, along with the
scriptingandwebNavigationpermissions. No new permissions were added. jsdom tests, manifest and asset checks, GitHub Actions CI, and documentation for architecture, blocking policy, scoring, privacy, testing, Codex, and Claude were added. -
Store package and graphics: The 1.0.6 Chrome Web Store package contains only active extension files. Screenshots and promotional tiles were updated separately in Spanish and English.
Visual blocking acts on page elements; it does not intercept network requests. YouTube's player may still refuse to skip some unskippable ads.
